Out West explores race, geography, identity, belonging and hope rooted in multicultural England of past and present. Tanika Gupta’s The Overseas Student reimagines Gandhi’s formative student years in Victorian England; Simon Stephens’ Blue Water and Cold and Fresh, inspired by a series of conversations with Emmanuella Cole, confronts white male privilege in the wake of city lockdown living and Black Lives Matter protests, and Roy Williams’ Go, Girl  is a celebratory story of Black female empowerment and everyday heroism.

The creative approach was to capture these without an audience and tailor them just for camera. We wanted to make sure the people watching on screen got an intimate experience while making sure there was enough shot variety to sustain the audience for the length of the play.

We broke the 3 individual plays up into sections that we filmed from multiple angles. With them being one person plays, we had to keep an eye on continuity and also shot selection.
